CleanSlate LogoAfter a waiting period that remains crime-free, these state laws can either seal or expunge certain offenses from a person’s criminal record. These laws typically include most misdemeanor crimes.

Some states also include low level felonies in the scope of their law. Violent crimes and sex crimes are often specifically excluded.

Currently, 12 states have enacted some form of Clean Slate Law:

  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Pennsylvania
  • Oklahoma
  • Utah
  • Virginia

 

Pending legislation is being considered in North Caroline and Rhode Island.
